Alright, so I’m a sucker for a good television spot. That, or maybe I am so used to fast forwarding the DVR that I don’t see commercials that often. But when I do watch live television, I tend to pay attention to the commercials. I saw one last night for Philadelphia Cream Cheese that caught my eye. And of course, I wanted to blog about it because I was inspired by what I saw.
Problem was, I couldn’t find it. And I looked everywhere. I had to find it because it was television perfection; the music, the realness of the actors and the inspiration on the various ways you can use their product, all tied up in 30 neatly organized little seconds.
The inspiration for me was when I saw a lady put cream cheese in spaghetti sauce. Are you kidding me? I never thought of that one and you’re talking to a guy that puts ketchup on eggs and dips fries in bbq sauce. Is putting cream cheese in red sauce a common thing? Not since peanut butter met jelly have I been so intrigued about a food combo. You see where I’m going with this, right? This brand inspired me to try something new.
So I find myself looking for this ad, as I mentioned, and I stumble upon something better. Philadelphia Cream Cheese’s YouTube Channel. Solid! Sure enough, there’s the recipe in video form of putting cream cheese in your red sauce. Plus a lot of other things I may have to check out later.
Now you may be wondering what the point of all this is, other than Fleming is going to eat well tonight. Point is, I went out looking for Philadelphia Cream Cheese content, and although I didn’t find what I was originally looking for, I found something better. I found something more helpful. I found something that makes me scoff at the notion of buying generic brand cream cheese.
A note to brands out there: Customers expect you to be where they are. Are you making it easy for them to find your content? Is your content available in the places they are searching? Are you making new content at all?
Here’s the recipe. Thanks Philadelphia Cream Cheese, now I too, “Love My Philly.”

Fantastic! Sounds like they have a great strategy for positioning their brand and making you (or anyone who thinks cream cheese and red sauce sound like a good combo) a fan of their brand for life. It is wonderful to see they took their initial concept and thought about the next steps to ensure you continued to be amazed with their brand.
I messed around with a similar recipe (I made it up) about 20 years ago. As I recall, it was good and the sauce turned out to be kind of orange. Great point made here, though. Be where your customers expect you to be. Another great lesson is repurpose content and have a schedule for refreshing/deleting so it never becomes stale.
