Social Media 102

by Josh Fleming on April 29, 2010

When I woke up this morning, I watched the news on this thing called a television. I listened to the car radio on my drive to work – during which I saw about 20 billboards. After lunch this afternoon I read three magazine articles. I actually held a printed magazine in my hand and turned pages. It was amazing. I’ve also tweeted like it’s going out of style, read news on my phone and read blog posts on my Mac. Why am I telling you this?

Because the idea of traditional media and social media working together is the answer.

It’s not one or the other. It’s both!

This post should serve as your official notice to fear the “social media guru.” You know the guy who tells you that traditional media is dead. Why fear him? Because if he feels that way, then all he understands (or knows how to sell) is social media. If he only understood traditional media he would tell you that social media is a fad. There are some great people doing great things with social media right now. But anyone who tells you to dump all of your traditional marketing in favor of social media is more worried about selling you something than selling you something that works.

I speak a lot about Social Media. I give the Social Media 101 talk quite a bit. I’d like to invite you to Social Media 102. What is Social Media 102? Check the teeter-totter image above. Social media is here to stay and will continue to grow in various ways. But traditional media isn’t going away. Sure it’s taken a hit with a whole host of new options for our eyeballs to look. But traditional media is still relevant, still works, and works even harder if enhanced with social media efforts. Instead of picking one over the other, you should pick both.

Nice work Josh. This post made me think of all the people calling themselves “Social Media Experts,” and made me laugh cause anyone who calls themselves an expert at anything is a flake…in my book.
